After a long wait, Mercedes finally announced this week that both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli have officially signed contracts until 2026. Both had been waiting for some time for the extension of their collaboration. Reportedly, Russell is particularly pleased. The Brit says he is ‘very satisfied’ with his new contract, which reflects his strong performance in the current season.
Mercedes announced on Wednesday that George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli will remain with the team until at least 2026. According to British tabloids, Russell’s new deal – since the departure of Lewis Hamilton, the frontman of the Silberpfeile – is worth a hefty 30 million pounds. Speaking to the media in Austin, he admitted that money was not the biggest sticking point during contract negotiations, although he also secured a substantial salary.
“I’m very happy to be able to continue,” said Russell in the run-up to the American GP. “Even if every seat for next year was available, I would still have chosen Mercedes,” he admitted. “I think I have the best chance of winning the title next year there. For me, winning is more important than money, sponsors, or anything else. I want to win, and that’s what I’m fighting for – it’s as simple as that.”
“Ultimately, it’s all about performance,” Russell continued. “That probably applies to all drivers. Knowing that I’m performing well makes me sleep better at night. At the same time, it keeps me sharp and motivated in this sport.” When asked about the terms of his new deal, Russell admitted that he is ‘very satisfied’. “Given the situation, Toto (Wolff, ed.) could have been much more frugal,” he revealed with a smile. “But I think he realizes that you have to reward those who perform, who commit and deliver results. That’s why I’m happy with the offer. At the same time, I see it as a bonus – my focus is still on building a fast race car.”
