With two races still to go, the new Formula E world champion has been declared: Oliver Rowland. The Nissan driver secured the title with a fourth-place finish in Berlin on Sunday. The British racer achieved this feat in the second race of the weekend in the German capital. Robin Frijns was on a good track in both races, but luck was not on his side.
As a result of Sunday’s race, Rowland now has a 59-point lead over the reigning world champion and current runner-up, Pascal Wehrlein. This means that the German driver cannot overtake the Brit in the final weekend in London. On Saturday, Wehrlein finished second in the first of the two races in Germany, but the following day he finished outside the top ten. Combined with Rowland’s fourth-place finish, this was enough to decide the championship.
Robin Fijns had no success on either day, despite the Dutch driver showing good form. In the Envision vehicle, he was in contention for the podium both times, but a lack of Attack Mode let him down on Saturday, and he dropped out on Sunday. The victories went to Mitch Evans on Saturday and Nick Cassidy on Sunday.
De Vries Absent
Nyck de Vries was notably absent in Berlin. The 2021 Formula E champion had commitments with Toyota: he was racing in the 6-hour São Paulo event in the World Endurance Championship. In this race, he and his team played a minor role in the Hypercar class. De Vries will be back behind the wheel of the Mahindra vehicle for the Formula E season finale in London.
