While Lando Norris leverages his superior McLaren to challenge Max Verstappen for the title, his teammate Oscar Piastri is also making a name for himself. The young Australian has already won two Grand Prix in his second Formula 1 season, consistently demonstrating his impressive skills. Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone is convinced; Piastri will one day be a champion in the premier class.
“He (Oscar Piastri) truly has something magical,” Bernie Ecclestone stated. “He will become a world champion at some point.” When asked when this might happen, the 93-year-old Englishman replied, “Within the next two years. If the car continues to perform as it is now, it will certainly happen.” The ex-head of Formula 1 emphasized that Piastri stands out due to his qualities. The 23-year-old Australian made his debut with McLaren last year, but already shows that he is on par with teammate Lando Norris.
‘Verstappen Will Secure His Fourth Title’
Before Oscar Piastri can compete for the final victory, the current season must first be decided. Ecclestone has no doubt that Max Verstappen will clinch his fourth title this year. Although McLaren may have taken the lead in the constructors’ championship, Ecclestone believes the Dutchman’s lead is too large to be threatened.
“He (Verstappen) has a nice lead, so now he just needs a bit of luck,” Ecclestone explained. “Personally, I think Max should be able to become champion.” The Dutchman has a fifty-two point lead ahead of the final six races of the season. Lando Norris will have to console himself with the constructors’ title for McLaren, which Ecclestone believes is already as good as won.
“McLaren has two very confident drivers and a very good car,” concluded the English businessman. “Norris may have made some mistakes in the past, and he knows that. But I think he has things well in order now.”
