Thierry Vermeulen is rapidly emerging as a Dutch star in the DTM. After a successful debut year, the 22-year-old from Limburg is having an even better second season in the German touring car class. “I’ve dreamed of this since I was a child,” he says.

With just one race weekend left (19 and 20 October, Hockenheim), Vermeulen’s second DTM year is coming to a close. There might still be a victory in store, which would be a satisfying conclusion to the race at the Sachsenring in early September. Despite a promising start where he secured pole position and was on track for a win, a botched pit stop by his team cost him his first DTM victory. He had to settle for a podium finish, coming in third. “You win as a team and lose as a team. That’s racing,” reflects Vermeulen.

Professionalism and Growth

His mature response is a testament to his professionalism, and it also speaks volumes about him as a person and a driver. “I’m confident that we can still show some great things as a team in the last two weekends. I’m also growing in this class,” says Vermeulen. He speaks enthusiastically about DTM. “I’ve dreamed of it since I was a child. You gain experience quickly, it’s a great class to race in. The races are exciting, the qualifications are always close. It’s not easy, the performance has to be really good. The margins are small.”

A New Star in Dutch Motorsport

It’s clear that Dutch motorsport has a new star in the DTM, thanks in part to the efforts of Verstappen.com Racing. “We’re active on various platforms, such as with Team Redline in sim racing and in rally racing with Jos Verstappen. And I’m glad I get to represent us in the DTM,” he says.

Vermeulen races in a Ferrari 296 GT3 from Emil Frey Racing. Decked out in the colors of Verstappen.com Racing, the car looks sleek and super fast. Vermeulen, with a smile, says, “The car looks really cool, I agree.”

Future Prospects

It seems only a matter of time before he secures a victory in this car. Perhaps Max Verstappen can help him: Raymond Vermeulen, Thierry’s father, is the manager of the three-time Formula 1 world champion. “I know Max personally,” says the DTM driver. “We talk regularly, have worked together a lot, for example on the sim and during test days. He gives good advice and tips, which can be about anything: from warming up tires to settings or driving in the rain.”

Vermeulen’s career promises much. Looking forward to more, perhaps a third DTM year? “That’s the plan, and in the long run, I hope to compete for the title,” he says.
