Rinus ‘VeeKay’ van Kalmthout will start seventh in the Indy 500. The Dutchman drove to the second starting row for the legendary event during Sunday’s qualification. With an average speed of 232.610 miles per hour (nearly 375 km/h), he just missed out on a spot in the Fast Six. His qualification came a day after a severe crash on the circuit in Indiana.

While Max Verstappen had to shake off Lando Norris in Imola, compatriot Rinus van Kalmthout was qualifying for the Indy 500. The Ed Carpenter Racing driver had already placed in the Fast Twelve, but now had to fight for a spot among the six fastest drivers. He didn’t succeed, the Hoofddorper was 0.03 kilometers per hour too slow to advance to the pole position battle.

Rinus van Kalmthout began his qualification for the Indy 500 with a severe crash on Saturday. The driver quickly lost control of the steering wheel and hit the wall hard. However, his mechanics were able to repair the car quickly enough, so ‘VeeKay’ could start as usual on Sunday.

The 108th edition of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for next Sunday, 18.45 (Dutch time). New Zealander Scott McLaughlin will then start from pole position – he won with a record average of 234.220 miles per hour in the Fast Six. Approximately 250,000 visitors are expected to attend the American spectacle.
