After the Singapore Grand Prix in September last year, Daniel Ricciardo bid farewell to his seat at Racing Bulls. At that time, Liam Lawson stepped up to the role of a regular driver. However, the New Zealander looks back with great appreciation at the support Ricciardo gave him after his departure.
“For us, of course, it was an extremely uncomfortable weekend,” Lawson reflects. “What I mainly took away from that is how incredibly good Daniel has been to me and how he supported me throughout the entire process. From the moment I stepped in because of his injury, until the moment I returned to my role as a reserve driver.”
According to Lawson, the bond between them was strong from the beginning – and it has remained so.
“We had a very good relationship, and we still do. My main memory of that weekend is how much respect I gained for him.” Despite not being as involved in Formula 1 anymore, Ricciardo kept in touch with Lawson. “He sent me a nice message after Baku. He has obviously gone his own way now, but he has always been incredibly supportive of me.”
