Could the return of the Grand Prix to Germany be a realistic possibility? Private investors have purchased 75% of the renowned former Formula 1 circuit in the city of Hockenheim. This, coupled with Audi’s entry into Formula 1 from 2026, has sparked hope that the premier class will eventually return to Germany.
According to the German news agency DPA, the buyers are five medium-sized companies, and the deal has already been unanimously approved by the Hockenheim city council. The Emodrom Group from Hockenheim confirms that the purchase price is approximately 5.5 million euros. The new owners are also responsible for about 20 million euros in debt.
Investment of 250 Million Euros
Emodrom plans to invest up to 250 million euros in the Hockenheimring over the next five to ten years, including a hotel. This is expected to result in about 300 new jobs. The construction of what is being called ‘Motorworld’ is already planned for the end of 2025. Primarily, the infrastructure around the circuit will be renovated. Funds are also being allocated for the construction of new facilities.
The city of Hockenheim will pay 90,000 euros per year to ensure the circuit continues to bear the city’s name. This agreement has been concluded for at least eight years and includes a unilateral option for another eight years.
The last time the Formula 1 circus visited Hockenheim was in 2019. The race was won by Max Verstappen at that time.
