Adrian Newey announced on Tuesday that he is making a move to Aston Martin. Earlier this year, the technician revealed his plans to leave Red Bull after a nineteen-year stint. For a moment, it seemed as if Adrian Newey was bidding farewell to his drafting table, but the opportunity to collaborate with Aston Martin was too enticing. At the age of 65, the Brit felt the need for ‘a new challenge’.

“During the race weekend in Suzuka, I was certain that I wanted to quit,” Adrian Newey responded at a press conference. “I genuinely had no idea what I wanted to do then, I just wanted to take some time to think about the future, plan my next step. Am I going to do something different, am I going to retire, am I going to a new team?”

Master Designer Adrian Newey Discusses His Move to Aston Martin

Master designer Adrian Newey revealed that he was certain in April that he was seeking ‘a new challenge’ in Formula 1. This led him to Aston Martin. “The enthusiasm of Lawrence (Stroll) is infectious. It’s actually unique for a team owner to be so directly involved in running the team. In the past, this was normal, think of Ron Dennis, Eddie Jordan, and Frank Williams. Therefore, it felt like a very natural choice,” said Newey.

Newey’s Focus on 2026 and New Regulations

At Aston Martin, Adrian Newey wants to focus primarily on 2026 and the new regulations that will be introduced then. “The new rules certainly offer opportunities, the question is whether we can take advantage of them,” Newey said about Aston Martin’s title chances. “We’re just going to do our best and see what comes of it. With partners like Honda and Aramco, we have everything we need to fight for the world championship. I look forward to helping the team.”
