Renault, the renowned engine supplier, is contemplating ceasing the production of Formula 1 engines. Currently, the French automotive giant is responsible for the power unit of the factory team, Alpine. If Renault indeed pulls the plug on the Formula 1 program, Alpine will have to scout for a new supplier.

Renault has been working on the new engines for 2026 for some time now. However, multiple sources suggest that the French company is considering stopping. Alpine, which has relied on French power units for years, is said to have already initiated talks with other potential suppliers. Renault’s departure would be a significant loss for Formula 1, as the sport was hoping to break records from 2026 with as many as six different engine suppliers.

Implications of Renault’s Potential Exit

If Renault indeed stops supplying Formula 1 engines, Alpine will be forced to become a customer of other major manufacturers. Honda and Audi are potential options, as both are only linked to one team. Ferrari, which will no longer need to supply engines to Sauber in 2026, is also a possibility. Lastly, Mercedes could also be a solution, as they will no longer be responsible for Aston Martin.

Renault’s Legacy in Formula 1

The Formula 1 engines from Renault have a long history in the sport. While the manufacturer currently only supplies to Alpine, several major teams have once relied on the French power units. Lotus, Red Bull, Visa RB, and even McLaren have trusted Renault’s engines.
