In the 1993 European GP, Ayrton Senna etched his name in history with one of the most iconic opening laps ever. The Brazilian, who fell from P4 to P5 at the start, overtook all his competitors in a single lap on a soaking wet Donington Park. In a matter of seconds, Senna climbed to the top spot, thanks to a lap that would be immortalized as the ‘Lap of the Gods’. 30 years after his death, his nephew Bruno Senna recreates this legendary feat.
Ayrton Senna’s ‘Lap of the Gods’ is one of the most heroic stunts in Formula 1 history. In a single lap, Senna overtook drivers like Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, and Alain Prost, eventually winning the race. The lap record he set in that race remains the fastest Formula 1 race time on the Leicestershire circuit.
A Tribute to Senna’s Phenomenal Race and the ‘Lap of the Gods’
Almost all cars were lapped before Senna crossed the finish line first, with a lead of 1 minute and 23 seconds. Now, 30 years after Senna’s tragic death, McLaren pays tribute to this phenomenal race and the ‘Lap of the Gods’.
Bruno Senna’s Historic Lap at Donington Park
Bruno Senna, the nephew of the Brazilian legend, took the opportunity to drive the McLaren Senna, a hypercar from the British car manufacturer named after the three-time world champion. Bruno also earns a place in the history books of Donington Park. His lap time of 1:30.5 is an unofficial lap record for a street car on the English circuit.
