In recent races, Red Bull has been outpaced by rivals McLaren and Ferrari, causing the team to fear for their second place in the constructors’ championship. Max Verstappen, tasked with defending his championship with a faltering RB20, has six races left to secure the title. However, Verstappen may also face a grid penalty in the near future.

During the Belgian GP, Max Verstappen received a ten-place grid penalty for using his fifth engine at Spa. The question is whether he can finish the season with this engine. According to the reputable Formu1a.uno, the Dutchman will definitely need to install a new power unit in his RB20 at least once more. Since he has already received a grid penalty, the next penalty would be less severe – he would have to give up five places instead of ten.

São Paulo: The Ideal Choice?

The question is when Verstappen should best take a grid penalty. The upcoming race weekend in Austin is not an option, as Red Bull wants to test a number of new upgrades there. During the Mexican GP, overtaking is less feasible due to the high altitude and limited DRS effect, making a grid penalty less than ideal here as well. If Verstappen indeed needs an engine change, it is highly likely he will opt for São Paulo.

In the past, several drivers have proven that there are ample overtaking opportunities in Brazil. Therefore, even with a grid penalty, Verstappen still has a chance for a good final classification. If he chooses a new engine in São Paulo, it only needs to withstand four races and two sprints.
