Reserve driver Liam Lawson was in action for Red Bull on Thursday. The New Zealander took the RB20 for a few laps around the Silverstone circuit. Team boss Christian Horner assured the press that it was a routine test day on behalf of Pirelli. However, Red Bull would have kept a close eye on the lap times – Lawson is one of the candidates for Sergio Pérez’s seat, who may have to leave early this summer.
While mid-season testing with current cars is generally not allowed, Formula 1 makes exceptions for so-called ‘filming days’. Red Bull took advantage of this rule on Thursday and put Liam Lawson in the RB20 at Silverstone. The New Zealander was given a special Pirelli tire for the occasion. According to the strict rules of the sport, he was only allowed to cover 200 kilometers (33 laps).
Red Bull’s Test Results: A Veil of Secrecy
Red Bull remains tight-lipped about the results of their recent tests. So far, all we know is that Liam Lawson had to contend with heavy rainfall, much like during last Sunday’s Grand Prix at Silverstone. Whether the 22-year-old driver has shown enough to secure a contract is still up in the air. It also depends on Sergio Pérez, who, according to Helmut Marko, has two decisive Grand Prix races left to prove himself. During the summer break, the balance will be struck, and the Mexican driver could potentially be let go.
The Battle for Pérez’s Coveted Seat
Several drivers are vying for Pérez’s coveted seat. Yuki Tsunoda has also put himself forward as a candidate through his strong performances this season. It’s quite possible that the Japanese driver will be promoted to Red Bull, and Lawson will rejoin Visa RB. However, Lawson is looking beyond what the Austrians have to offer. Reportedly, his management is in talks with Audi, in anticipation of the debut of the Audi factory team in 2026.
