Ralf Schumacher compares the racing skills of his nephew Mick Schumacher to those of current Formula 1 drivers. According to the analyst, the young Schumacher demonstrated during a recent IndyCar test that he is superior to three drivers who do have a spot in the premier class. “I would say that all three of them, in my opinion, are worse than Mick, even significantly worse,” says Schumacher.

Mick Schumacher was able to call himself a Formula 1 driver until the end of 2022, until Haas decided to replace the German with compatriot Nico Hülkenberg. Since then, the young Schumacher has been dreaming of a return to the premier class, but he has not gotten closer than a role as a reserve driver for Mercedes. In the meantime, Schumacher has already done a test in the American IndyCar series – “so far so good,” Schumacher judged afterwards – although the driver has not yet made concrete plans for his further racing career.

Ralf Schumacher – former F1 driver and uncle of the young Schumacher – however, believes that his nephew is better in terms of racing skills than three current drivers in the premier class. Schumacher spoke about the young driver’s IndyCar test in the Backstage Boxengasse podcast. “To be honest, this test was a joke, the way it was organized,” the former driver begins. “The goal was clear. In Le Castellet, every driver knows that the circuit is two and a half seconds faster in the morning than in the afternoon, sometimes even three. However, they let Mick drive in the afternoon.”

‘Worse than Mick’

“I don’t want to go back to that now, but if you understand my point of view and look at the careers of the drivers, including the current drivers in Formula 1, then I think Mick would definitely be better than Yuki Tsunoda,” Schumacher continues. “I know that Franz (Tost, former team boss at AlphaTauri, ed.) might agree with me now, that was not the case then, but in my opinion, he is better than Liam Lawson. Franco Colapinto had a great start, but he has not developed in the same way so far. And therefore I would say that all three of them, in my opinion, are worse than Mick, even significantly worse,” concludes the current analyst.
