Pirelli plans to introduce a new soft compound in 2025. CEO Mario Isola reveals that the tyre supplier will bring the new C6 tyre to five races in the upcoming season. The introduction of the tyre is a response to the decreasing number of pit stops in Formula 1, and an attempt by Pirelli to inject more excitement into the premier class.
The number of pit stops during races has been steadily decreasing over the past few years. This is not only due to cars being increasingly adapted to put as little strain on the tyres as possible, but also because drivers are increasingly adjusting their driving style. In addition, there are more and more street races on the calendar, where tyre wear plays a less significant role.
Pirelli now wants to turn the tide with the introduction of the extra soft C6 tyre. The new tyre was already tested by Carlos Sainz Jr among others during the post-season test. “We want to be able to offer the combination of the C4, C5, and C6 tyre at multiple weekends,” Pirelli CEO Mario Isola reveals in Bahrain the next step for the softest compound.
Five Races
The Grand Prix of Monaco, often one of the least exciting races on the calendar, is seen as the main candidate for the introduction of the C6 tyre. According to Isola, the race in the principality is one of the five races where the compound will make its debut.
“We want to bring the C6 to four or five races, not just to Monaco.” Isola wants to use the soft compound already in Imola. “Then in Montreal. After that, we’ll see how it goes. Both are prestigious circuits. If it goes well, we’ll probably also see the C6 in Singapore and Las Vegas. Together with Monaco, that makes five races.”
