Pierre Gasly has a clear idea of who he would like to have as his teammate in 2025. Although Esteban Ocon will only leave Alpine at the end of the season, his teammate already has a replacement in mind.
In early June, it was announced that Esteban Ocon will leave Alpine at the end of 2024. The driver has been with the French team, formerly known as Renault, since 2020. Where Ocon will be driving next year remains unclear, as does who will replace him at Alpine. Pierre Gasly, who did secure a contract extension, knows exactly who he would like to have as a teammate.
Gasly Expresses Desire for Sainz as Teammate
“I think it’s clear that Carlos [Sainz] is the most experienced and valuable player,” Gasly tells Motorsport Week. “I would like to have him next to me next year. He can add a lot to the team and I think we will be a great combination.” Sainz is currently driving for Ferrari, but will have to make way for Lewis Hamilton at the end of the season.
If Sainz does not want to move to France, Gasly also knows who else are contenders for the second Alpine seat. “We also have a few very good options. We have Jack [Doohan, Alpine reserve driver], we have Mick [Schumacher] who has driven in F1. We just have several good options,” says the Frenchman.
Williams Also Waiting on Sainz
Sainz also has multiple options for next year. The three-time Grand Prix winner can step into the Williams seat next to Alexander Albon, if team boss James Vowles has his way. “He is a world-class driver,” the Brit said about Sainz, to PlanetF1. Vowles is therefore willing to wait a bit on Sainz’s decision. “The timeline is actually less important to me. What is more important is forging a long-term relationship with each other.” The team boss hopes to make a choice by September.
