Ralf Schumacher has expressed his concerns about Oscar Piastri, who is currently in the midst of the battle for the world championship. According to the former Formula 1 driver, the young Australian seems to be unhappy at McLaren – a dangerous development at such a crucial point in the season, warns Schumacher.
“You can see that he feels things around him have changed. And that’s very, very dangerous,” says Schumacher. The German is referring to Piastri’s attitude during recent race weekends, where teammate Lando Norris often had the upper hand. According to Schumacher, Piastri seems to be struggling with the direction in which McLaren is developing the car, and he is looking too much for explanations outside of himself.
“When you’re walking around looking for excuses – perhaps saying there’s something wrong with the car – and you see Webber constantly on the phone, it looks from the outside as if you’re no longer completely satisfied,” Schumacher explains. “That would be fatal. Now it’s up to McLaren to say: ‘Come on, focus.'”
No preferential treatment at McLaren
According to Schumacher, there is no reason within McLaren to favor one driver over the other. He dismisses rumors that the team might prefer Norris as nonsense. “What reason would McLaren have to favor one over the other? None at all. It makes no sense for a team to give one of the drivers a bad car,” he asserts.
