McLaren driver Oscar Piastri claimed victory at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, closely followed by teammate Lando Norris. The post-race scenes were telling: while the two drivers casually discussed the race in parc fermé, George Russell – who completed the podium – was only just entering the pit lane in the background. Max Verstappen (P4) later admitted he was ‘completely outclassed’ by McLaren. Are we gearing up for an internal title fight?
Rumours have been circulating in recent weeks that the current season could culminate in a battle between Piastri and Norris. McLaren is reportedly so dominant now. Comparisons are increasingly being drawn with the so-called Silver War, the period when only Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg realistically stood a chance at the title. As of 2025, we might well be talking about a Papaya War – with the exception of the Japanese GP, McLaren has won all the races.
During the post-race press conference for the Miami Grand Prix, Piastri acknowledged McLaren’s current lead. “The lead exists, but it varies from circuit to circuit,” he admitted. When asked, the Australian explained that a potential title fight with his teammate would be exciting regardless. “We are both aware of each other’s strengths,” Piastri elaborated. “So it will definitely be an interesting battle. There will be weekends when Lando (Norris) is faster, and weekends when I am faster.”
McLaren Takes the Lead
“Of course, we both want to win the title, but ultimately, McLaren is number one for both of us,” he added. “We want the best for the team. In the end, we are striving for long-term success. That’s something we both need to keep in mind. This season, we are laying the foundation for the future.” Lando Norris, who was present at the same press conference, remained noncommittal. When asked if he expected a Papaya War, he responded cryptically: “We’ll see.”
Piastri claimed his fourth victory of the season in Miami, thereby winning one more Grand Prix than his teammate. It was also his third consecutive win. The Australian has extended his lead over Norris to sixteen points. Max Verstappen – third in the championship – is now 32 points behind the McLaren driver.
