Over the team radio, Oscar Piastri expressed his surprise and disappointment at the team order to let his McLaren teammate Lando Norris pass in the final stages of the Italian GP in Monza after a failed pit stop. Immediately after the race, the Australian championship leader was noncommittal. “A minor incident, but it’s okay!”
Piastri was flagged off as third, but without intervention from above, he would have simply come in second. Immediately after the race, on the grid, F1 TV interviewer Davide Valsecchi surprisingly enough did not question Piastri about the incident. “We’ll carry on cheerfully and try to come back even stronger next time,” said Piastri, who was already looking forward to the Azerbaijan GP in Baku.
Regarding the course of the race, Oscar Piastri said the following: “I had a difficult start to the race and didn’t immediately have the speed. It took a few laps before I passed Charles Leclerc and after that it was more or less a lonely race. I struggled a bit with my speed, but when the tires started to wear down, things got better. In the final stages, I opted for the soft tires, which was the most logical option at that time. Overall, it wasn’t a bad weekend for me.”
