Oscar Piastri had a phenomenal start in Austria, immediately overtaking Charles Leclerc for second place. In lap 11, the Australian launched an attack on teammate Lando Norris, sparking an exciting battle for the race lead. Ultimately, Piastri came up short, finishing second behind his teammate. However, the Australian still maintains the lead in the drivers’ championship.
“Intense,” is how the Australian summed up the race afterwards. “I hope it was fun to watch because it was hard work in the car. But I did my best. I could have done a bit better when I was ahead of him (Norris), but it was a good fight. It was on the limit, but a good race. That’s why we’re here. I was close to a win, but it just wasn’t enough.” Piastri then thanked the entire McLaren team.
Good Pace
Piastri started the race in third place, compared to the pole position of teammate Lando Norris, but felt during the race that victory was within reach. “Yesterday’s qualification was a bit unfortunate because of the yellow flag,” the Australian reflected on the session a day earlier. “But the car’s pace was good all weekend. Once I was in the DRS zone, it felt good. But when I fell out of the DRS zone, it was difficult to make enough progress to get back in.”
