Oscar Piastri had to settle for the third starting position in Singapore. The McLaren driver watched as both Max Verstappen and the Mercedes drivers outperformed him throughout the session, but he was able to keep Andrea Kimi Antonelli at bay. “That was the best I could do,” admits the Australian.
While George Russell and Max Verstappen battled for pole position, championship leader Oscar Piastri could only secure a second-row start. “Yes, of course I wanted more,” the Australian sighs immediately after the session, speaking to interviewer David Coulthard. To protect the drivers from the heat at the Marina Bay Street Circuit as much as possible, the top three were interviewed simultaneously after qualifying.
Russell Proves Too Strong
“But I don’t think we had the extra four-tenths in the car needed to challenge George for pole position,” Piastri continues his analysis. “So, in the end, I’m quite happy with the result. Overall, it feels like a good weekend, and the session went without any major incidents. That’s all I really needed.” His teammate and closest title rival, Lando Norris, will start the race from the fifth position, behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
