Oscar Piastri commends colleague and role model Fernando Alonso. The Australian – who is involved in a title fight for the first time this year – reveals what he has learned from the experienced Spaniard, and why Alonso is actually underrated. ‘He is a driver whose statistics do not tell the whole story,’ believes the McLaren driver.
After the summer break, the title fight between teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will continue in Zandvoort. The difference between the two McLaren drivers is only nine World Championship points, in favor of the Australian. A driver who knows all too well what it’s like to fight for a title is Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard won his second championship in 2006 with a lead of just thirteen points over second-place Michael Schumacher.
In Zandvoort, Piastri says he is certainly impressed by the veteran. “He is a driver whose statistics do not tell the whole story,” the Australian explains. “He is one of the best drivers this sport has ever seen. He is truly a great driver, and we get along well.”
Working Method
However, the McLaren driver does not only sing praises for the more experienced Spaniard, but also learns from the working methods of the Aston Martin driver. “His way of working has taught me a lot. The questions he asks (to his team) and the things he thinks about. This makes him a truly great driver.”
