Oscar Piastri, known for his laid-back attitude during race weekends, is often compared to former world champion Kimi Räikkönen and has even been dubbed ‘Ice Boy‘. However, the Australian driver is not entirely sure he is pleased with this nickname.
In his third year in Formula 1, Oscar Piastri has not only matched the six victories of his teammate Lando Norris, but has also emerged as the main title contender. Piastri currently leads the drivers’ championship, the first Australian to do so since his manager Mark Webber. In addition to his impressive performances, the Melbourne native is also known for his ‘laid-back attitude’ during races, following in the footsteps of the ‘Iceman‘ Kimi Räikkönen.
Reluctant Ice Boy
Piastri is now even referred to as ‘Ice Boy‘, due to his similarities with the Finnish world champion, but he doesn’t entirely agree with this. “I’m not sure I want to be known as ‘Ice Boy‘,” Piastri half-jokingly tells the media in Spain. “I think my emotions vary each time. There have certainly been qualifications and races where I wasn’t laid-back and there was a lot of emotion involved. But there are also races where you go out knowing that if you do well enough, you can achieve the result you want.”
“Don’t get me wrong, it’s incredibly nice to achieve good results, but I think I’m just not a particularly emotional person,” Piastri continues. “That’s just how I am.” The McLaren driver secured pole position on Saturday in Spain, the fourth of his career, but immediately shifts his focus to the race. “It’s nice to start on pole, but it’s not the end of the weekend. The points are to be earned on Sunday.”
