Alpine driver Jack Doohan is thrilled to see an Australian leading the drivers’ championship once again. Oscar Piastri has been at the top of the championship since the Saudi Arabian GP, closely followed by teammate Lando Norris. Doohan is quietly proud of his compatriot, but he is hesitant to predict whether Piastri can clinch the title this season.

With his victory in Jeddah, Oscar Piastri not only became the first driver of this season to claim three wins, but he also took over as the new leader in the drivers’ championship. The Australian took the position from his teammate Lando Norris. In Piastri’s home country of Australia, there is already a great deal of excitement about the local hero’s chances of winning the title. However, fellow countryman Jack Doohan cautions against getting ahead of ourselves.

“We’ve only had five races this season,” Doohan tells Sky Sports F1. “There are still nineteen races to go, which is quite a lot.” The Alpine driver secretly hopes that his compatriot Piastri can clinch the title, although he is not yet ready to make a concrete prediction. “Lando is also very strong. The two drivers are close to each other.”

Still, Doohan is somewhat proud that an Australian is now leading the drivers’ championship. “It’s great to see, and it’s been a while,” the driver continues. “I believe Mark (Webber) was the last Australian to lead the drivers’ championship. So it’s great to see.” Webber, who is now Piastri’s manager, was the last Australian to lead the championship in 2010.
