For Oscar Piastri, the victory in Belgium on Sunday was special for several reasons, not least because of his grandfather. The Australian dedicated his win at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit to him.
Winning a prestigious Grand Prix, extending his lead over rival and teammate Lando Norris in the title race, and securing a 1-2 finish for McLaren; there were plenty of reasons for Piastri to be pleased with the victory. But achieving it in the presence of his grandfather Piastri was extra special, he explained afterwards.
“This is the first time my grandfather has been at a race outside Australia,” said his grandson. “So that’s why I think it’s nice to dedicate the victory to him.” According to Piastri, family always brings luck: “In Spain, it also went well when my little sister was visiting.”
Laughing, he added: “Maybe I should invite a family member to every race from now on.”
