Under a clear blue sky, Oscar Piastri drives to pole position in Zandvoort. The Australian secures his fifth pole position in his still short Formula 1 career at the circuit in the dunes. Piastri may be taking away the reason for a celebration from the present Max Verstappen fans, but he starts the Dutch GP with the best starting position for the title fight with teammate Lando Norris.

Oscar Piastri takes pole position in Zandvoort. The Australian is not only on pole for the race on Sunday but also to further extend his lead over teammate Lando Norris in the championship. “That was definitely peaking at the right moment,” says a relieved Piastri immediately after the qualification. “The whole weekend felt good. I couldn’t go faster in a few corners, but I could make up for that on other parts of the circuit. I am very happy with the pole position, especially because it seemed to be a difficult weekend.”

‘I kept getting better’

The Australian’s pole position was somewhat surprising, looking at the free practice sessions. There, teammate and title rival Lando Norris was consistently at the top of the time list. “You keep going, that’s the advantage when you have so many free practice sessions,” says the Australian about his improving form over the weekend so far. “I could keep getting better. I still have a few things to improve, but overall I’m happy.” And does Piastri think he can convert his pole into a win at the main event on Sunday and thus extend his lead over his teammate in the championship? “We’ll see about that tomorrow,” the McLaren driver concludes mysteriously.
