Esteban Ocon praises his new race engineer, Laura Mueller. The German made history last January as the first female race engineer in the premier class. Ocon illustrates the dedication of his ‘amazing engineer’ with an anecdote from the Grand Prix at Suzuka.
Laura Mueller made Formula 1 history last January by becoming the very first female race engineer in the racing class. The German has been working with Esteban Ocon at the Haas team since the start of the season. According to the Frenchman, the collaboration between the two is going excellently.
“It’s great to work with Laura,” Ocon begins in the Beyond the Grid podcast. “She really is an amazing engineer. She has a lot of experience in many different categories. For example, she has done DTM, and so have I, so we have that in common. Her trajectory is very impressive.”

According to the driver, his race engineer is also extremely dedicated to her new job. “I remember we had a tough race in Suzuka,” Ocon tells an anecdote about Mueller. “But we still had meetings and discussions afterwards, because it wasn’t the way we wanted to perform. Laura probably didn’t stand up all day to even grab a sandwich or drink. She was like, ‘Esteban, I’m probably going to eat something now, because it’s already half past seven or eight in the evening.’ And I said, ‘Haven’t you eaten yet?’ And she said, ‘No,’ because she didn’t feel like it. She was so busy working.”
Mueller’s dedication has certainly paid off for Haas. Ocon drove into the top ten during the races in China and Bahrain, allowing the driver to score valuable points for the team.
