A sigh of relief for Nyck de Vries! After a season and a half in Formula E with the Mahindra team, the Dutchman finally returned to the podium this weekend. The former Formula 1 driver crossed the finish line in second place on the streets of Monaco on Saturday. For a moment, De Vries – who was the world champion in the electrified racing class in 2021 – had a shot at victory, but in the end, he had to concede to winner Oliver Rowland.

Nyck de Vries made his comeback in Formula E a year and a half ago after a brief Formula 1 career with AlphaTauri. Having previously won the title with the Mercedes team, he now races for the Indian Mahindra Racing. In the 2023/2024 season, the Frisian driver did not win any awards and finished in eighteenth place in the championship. This time, De Vries seems to be faring better – on Saturday, he secured second place in rainy Monaco.

Towards the end of the race, De Vries had a run-in with Jake Dennis, although the Brit had already received a five-second time penalty at that point. Nico Müller, reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein, and Edoardo Mortara were also hot on his heels, but Müller deliberately dropped back. “Thank you, thank you, very well executed,” an enthusiastic Nyck de Vries exclaimed over the radio after the race. The Mahindra team also had something to celebrate. The Indians had not won a trophy since the E-Prix in Mexico in 2022.

Season Standings

Victor Oliver Rowland is on track for a title this season. In the first six races, the Brit has already won three times. This has given him a significant lead over his closest competitor, Wehrlein. Nyck de Vries also made good progress in the rankings with his podium finish – he now holds the fifth position. Additionally, fellow countryman Robin Frijns had a commendable race in the principality. He crossed the finish line in eighth place and, after a challenging start to the season, scored points for the second time.
