A week after his resounding victory in Formula 1’s crown jewel in Monaco, Lando Norris has (temporarily) fallen from his pink cloud. The Brit loses the first round of the Spanish Grand Prix qualification to teammate Oscar Piastri. An old problem rears its head. “The speed was there, but I made a few mistakes,” he admits.

Norris is three points behind Piastri in the world championship. A victory in Spain would once again put him at the top of the standings. After a dazzling start in VT1 and the qualification, it turns out his Australian teammate and main title rival has things even better sorted. “Oscar drove very well,” Norris acknowledges. “The speed was there, but I made a few mistakes.”

Annoying, but not decisive for the course of the race, the Brit believes. “The stretch to the first corner is long. We have a starting position for an interesting start,” says Norris. “Hopefully, it will be an easy race. I’m happy, this is a good result for us.” When asked if he fears the competition, with Piastri in front of him and Max Verstappen behind him, he doesn’t have to think long. “Why? We have the best car.”
