In the lead-up to the Austrian Grand Prix, Lando Norris extensively reflected on his collision with teammate Oscar Piastri during the race weekend in Canada. The British driver emphasized that there have been ‘many discussions’ within the McLaren camp and that he has taken full responsibility for the incident. He regrets making so many mistakes, unlike his seemingly relaxed teammate.

In the closing stages of the Canadian Grand Prix, Norris made a desperate attempt to overtake Piastri. A reckless overtaking maneuver resulted in a collision, forcing Norris to retire and allowing Piastri to cross the finish line in fourth place. This strengthened the Australian’s position in the championship, while Norris was left frustrated and guilt-ridden. “There have been many discussions,” he sighed to the media in Austria. “They weren’t the happiest of conversations, but they had to be had. I made it clear from the start that I had made a judgment error and that I was taking the blame.”

According to Norris, the collision was a wake-up call within McLaren, but one that ultimately brought the team closer together. “Many things turned out better than you might expect,” he stated. “It’s a good outcome. A lot has been learned from an unfortunate situation, and we are stronger than before.” The mistake hit him hard, especially as it put pressure on his relationship with the team and with Piastri. “It took me time to process it, because my team means everything to me,” he admitted. “They are the people who gave me a chance in Formula 1. What happened in Montreal was incredibly painful. The last thing I want is an incident with my teammate.”

Norris: ‘Piastri is More Comfortable’

Despite the high emotions, Norris maintains that his collaboration with Piastri remains strong. According to him, the crash has not led to stricter team rules or racing restrictions, something Piastri had previously confirmed. “Everything is the same,” Norris assured. “We are still allowed to race hard. But the most important thing is that I have taken responsibility. That’s a good example for us as a team. Trust and honesty are essential. We want to avoid crashing as hard as some other teams have in the past.”

In the battle for the driver’s title, Piastri has further extended his lead. The difference with Norris currently stands at 22 World Championship points. Norris openly acknowledged that his teammate is currently the superior party. “I have made more mistakes, that’s clear,” said Norris. “Oscar feels more comfortable this season. I have had to work harder and perform more than before, because the car was not always cooperative. But it remains my job to deliver.” Finally, he also sees the positive side of the internal struggle. “It’s exciting to see how close it is,” he emphasized. “We push each other, and that makes us stronger as a team. That’s something not many other teams can say.”
