The Grand Prix of Mexico promises to be a spectacle tonight (start 20:00 UTC). Lando Norris starts from pole position and can take a significant step in his pursuit of the world title. The Brit has his major rivals Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri behind him on the starting grid. “We’re going all out for the win,” Norris said combatively after qualifying.
Next to him on the first starting row is Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari driver is seeking revenge and hopes to finally bring the Scuderia another victory. The last one dates back a year ago, notably on this same circuit. Behind him, teammate Lewis Hamilton starts at P3, his best starting position so far for Ferrari. According to the seven-time world champion, this offers perspective: “It’s a long sprint to the first corner, and I actually have the best starting position.”
Following them is a strong block on the grid with George Russell (P4), Verstappen (P5), rookie Kimi Antonelli (P6), and Piastri (P7). Verstappen and Piastri are disappointed with their qualification, as with Norris on pole, they know that every point counts in the title fight. The Dutchman is pessimistic about this race: “The car just doesn’t work here, and unless something unusual happens in front of me, it’s not going to happen.”
Opportunities and Fireworks
There is also disappointment at the Williams team. Carlos Sainz outperformed Piastri in the qualifiers and impressively drove to P7. However, due to a grid penalty incurred in Austin, the Spaniard fell back to the twelfth spot on the starting grid. Alex Albon struggled with grip during the qualifiers and consequently ended up at P17. Yet, team boss James Vowles still sees opportunities: “I am confident that we will see Alex fighting at the front again and taking advantage of the long straight line from where we start on the grid. This race always provides good opportunities and fireworks!”
