Lando Norris has admitted that he will face the repercussions of the incident with Oscar Piastri in the opening round in Singapore ‘until the end of the season’. During an aggressive overtaking maneuver, the two McLaren drivers made contact. The team decided not to intervene during the race – much to Piastri’s frustration – but later imposed ‘repercussions’ on Norris.
Norris started the Singapore GP from the fifth starting position, but managed to gain two places in the first round. Teammate Oscar Piastri was also overtaken, although there was contact between the two McLaren drivers. The Australian called on the team to intervene, but the papayas did not respond. Eventually, Norris finished again before Piastri, further reducing his lead in the world championship.
‘Can’t afford a collision’
In the run-up to the GP in Austin, Norris explained that he has taken responsibility for the incident and is still experiencing the ‘repercussions’ of the collision. It is unclear to what extent McLaren has reprimanded him, but he himself says that he will feel the consequences until the end of the season. “There are lasting repercussions for me until the end of the season,” he revealed. “It’s not that I got away with it – it was a little incident that I could have tried to avoid.”
Norris emphasized that he always tries to race without contact. “I’m never waiting for a collision,” he continued. “I said it after the race; I can’t afford to make contact and risk something like that. At such a moment, I’m jeopardizing my own championship, as well as my opponent’s championship.” The Brit ended on a reassuring note: “Of course it has consequences for myself, but otherwise the involvement and the way we race is the same as always.”
