The McLaren team is shifting its focus to the crucial Qatar Grand Prix. Lando Norris could clinch the title for the first time at the Lusail International Circuit, and is therefore heading into the final sprint weekend of the season with a fighting spirit. For Oscar Piastri, the Qatari circuit is the place where he achieved his first sprint victory in 2023. The Australian is hoping to turn the tide in the title fight: ‘I’m looking forward to the opportunity to regain the lead.’
After a disqualification setback, the McLaren team is focusing on the important race weekend in Qatar. Championship leader Lando Norris could decide the title fight in his favor for the first time this Grand Prix weekend, provided he gains two points on both Max Verstappen and teammate Oscar Piastri after the Qatar GP. The Briton is therefore on the eve of perhaps the most exciting Grand Prix of his racing career.
“It’s great to return to Qatar for the final sprint weekend of the year,” the championship leader begins in the McLaren preview. “I’m looking forward to driving the MCL39 on the Lusail Circuit. There are several good overtaking opportunities, so I’m ready to go for the win.” Norris has never been able to clinch victory in Losail, and finished the Qatari race in tenth place last year.
Favourite Circuit
A year ago, Oscar Piastri did make it to the podium, behind winner Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. The Lusail International Circuit was also the place where the Australian achieved his very first victory, during a sprint race. “This is one of my favourite circuits on the calendar and I have great memories of this circuit, especially my first win in F1 in the 2023 sprint,” says the McLaren driver. “The circuit is fast and flowing, has many medium-speed and fast sections, and you can overtake well. I’m looking forward to both races and the chance to regain the lead.”
