Following the qualifying round in Canada, Lando Norris was once again notably critical of his own performance. The McLaren driver only managed to clock the seventh fastest time in Q3, while his teammate Oscar Piastri qualified third. “Not ideal,” Norris summed up his Saturday on Sky Sports F1.

The British driver made several mistakes in the final part of the qualifying round, even hitting the wall. “Just too many errors,” he admitted candidly. “I had confidence, the car felt good today, I just made too many mistakes.”

However, Norris still sees plenty of potential for the race on Sunday. McLaren’s race speed was competitive in the long runs on Friday, although he did temper expectations somewhat. “It looked good, but it wasn’t as good as Max Verstappen. We clearly don’t have an advantage on this circuit compared to normal,” he explains. “It’s much more a circuit where you just need good handling, can take kerbs and bumps, and where there’s little grip.”

Norris believes that the difference in tyre choice at the end of the qualifying round also played a role in his final position. “Perhaps the medium tyre was a bit faster at the end. I think our pace is good enough, but I’m again a bit too far behind,” laments the Brit, who once again has to start a comeback race.
