During the final phase of the Canadian Grand Prix, McLaren driver Lando Norris collided with the rear of his teammate Oscar Piastri‘s car. The Australian was able to continue without losing position, but Norris had to retire due to damage. “Sorry,” he said over the team radio. “My fault. Entirely my mistake. Stupid of me.”
During the race, Norris made a strong comeback with a long first stint on hard tyres. In the closing stages, he was closing in on Piastri, but an attack was complicated by the presence of backmarker Andrea Kimi Antonelli. This allowed Piastri to activate DRS and defend his position. In lap 65, Norris briefly overtook Piastri after the hairpin turn, but Piastri reclaimed his position at the chicane. At the next turn, Norris again tried to take the inside line, but there was no room. He crashed into Piastri, lost his front wing, and damaged his suspension against the wall.
After the race, Norris took full responsibility. “There’s no one else to blame but myself, so my apologies to the whole team and to Oscar. I tried something that was probably too stupid,” he told Sky News F1. “I’m glad I didn’t ruin his race.” In the paddock, Norris and Piastri shook hands. Piastri expressed understanding for the incident: “It was a tough but fair fight up to that point. I don’t think it was malicious, just unfortunate.”
Despite his retirement, Lando Norris remains second in the championship, but his deficit to Piastri has grown to 22 points.
