Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula 1, has announced that Monza is not guaranteed a spot on the Formula 1 calendar after 2031, when the current contract expires. According to Domenicali, the progress of renovations at the iconic circuit is severely lacking.
Although Monza has already begun a long-awaited renovation program, Domenicali believes the pace is far too slow. At the same time, he emphasizes the importance of the Italian Grand Prix for the sport. “A lot needs to happen from September 8,” Domenicali told Italian media. “The contract runs until 2031, but I want the Italian Grand Prix to continue beyond that, but with guarantees, concrete plans, and without endless discussions.”
GP Hungary as an Example
The F1 boss hopes that the work can be completed within a few years, although he acknowledges that this is a challenge for a historic circuit like Autodromo Nazionale Monza. However, he sees no reason why it couldn’t be done: “Hungary has shown that a complete renovation can be done in a short time. In Budapest, they renovated the circuit in record time.”
Although the Italian Grand Prix is scheduled for this weekend, Domenicali does not want that to be an excuse to sit back. His message is clear: “Action is needed.”
