Good news for fans of classic circuits. The Monaco Grand Prix will remain on the calendar until 2031. This was officially confirmed by Formula 1 on Thursday. As a result, the current contract for the Monegasque race is extended by six years.
The Grand Prix in the city-state has been on the calendar of the premier class since 1950. The race is seen as the ultimate test of concentration and skill for Formula 1 drivers. However, the Grand Prix often faces criticism because it is difficult to overtake with modern, wide Formula 1 cars on the streets of Monte-Carlo. Nevertheless, with the contract extension, Formula 1 has chosen to keep the iconic Grand Prix on the calendar for the time being.
“I am delighted that Formula 1 will continue to race in Monaco until 2031,” says Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and CEO of Formula 1, in the official press release. “The streets of Monte Carlo are unique and a famous part of Formula 1. The Monaco Grand Prix remains a race that all drivers dream of winning.
Sustainability
Formula 1 hopes to make the Formula 1 calendar more sustainable with the contract extension. “This agreement heralds a new era of partnership and innovation between Formula 1 and Monaco,” explains Domenicali. “It is the forward-thinking leadership of Prince Albert II of Monaco that will enable us to create an optimized calendar. The new calendar aims to reduce the pressure on logistics and decrease the environmental impact of our global championship, while we continue on the path to our Net Zero goal in 2030.”
