Mick Schumacher, who served as Mercedes’ reserve driver this season, is set to leave the German team. However, he will continue his journey with Alpine in endurance racing.

Mick Schumacher will step down from his role as Mercedes’ reserve driver at the end of the season to pursue other opportunities. The 25-year-old son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher has been a reserve driver for two years, after losing his seat at Haas.

Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes Team

“He deserves to participate in the top championships”

The Formula 2 champion, who is also German, participated in this year’s World Endurance Championship for the Alpine team, owned by Renault. “Between his work in the simulator, testing different cars, and his participation in the track team, we couldn’t ask for more,” said Toto Wolff, head of the Mercedes team, in a statement released for the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix.

“We have seen, both during his time in F1 and this year with his performances in the World Endurance Championship, that he is a driver of incredibly high caliber and deserves to participate in the top championships,” Wolff added.

Bottas to Replace Schumacher?

Mick Schumacher stated that Mercedes helped him become a more experienced race driver and better understand the technical aspect. “Watching these cars race without being in the cockpit is tough. I want to focus 100% on racing again. I want to fully dedicate myself to the sporting aspect of motorsport,” he added.

Schumacher will continue his journey with Alpine in the WEC for a second season behind the wheel of the A424. In the meantime, Mercedes has approached Valtteri Bottas, its former driver and Grand Prix winner, who will leave Sauber at the end of the season and could be the next reserve driver for the German team.
