Mick Schumacher is considering a move to the American IndyCar series and recently tested in an IndyCar. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko sees it as an opportunity for the German, but at the same time, he strongly warns of the dangers of high speeds on the ovals.

Schumacher recently tested with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and made an impression. However, it is unlikely that this will lead to a seat for the 2026 IndyCar season, as the team’s three seats have already been assigned to Graham Rahal, Devlin DeFrancesco, and Louis Foster. Helmut Marko, however, sees both opportunities and dangers for the former Formula 1 driver.

“It’s a strong and competitive series,” Marko says in an interview with Sport.de. “It would be a nice step for the German; his test there was very encouraging. If he feels comfortable in America and gets the hang of the ovals – he will need a few races for that – then it will certainly work out well.” At the same time, Marko warns of the risks: “That would be too dangerous for me. With an average speed of 340 km/h, there is a risk of serious accidents. In such a case, it usually involves a very big crash.” The advice is clear: it can be a great opportunity, but it requires careful preparation and a lot of courage.

A New Challenge

After losing his full-time Formula 1 spot, Schumacher is looking for new challenges. The German last raced in Formula 1 in 2022, the second of his two seasons with Haas. In recent years, he has been a reserve driver for Mercedes and has participated in endurance races for Alpine. A move to IndyCar would mean a new phase in Schumacher’s career: a competitive environment where he can once again show what he’s capable of.
