Former F1 race director Michael Masi is making his return to motorsport. The Australian is taking on the role of event director for a New Zealand open-wheel racing series for the first time since the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and is looking forward to his new challenge.

In 2019, Masi succeeded Charlie Whiting as race director in Formula 1 after Whiting unexpectedly passed away from a pulmonary embolism. The Australian held the position until 2021, when he came under fire for his decisions during the title-deciding Abu Dhabi GP. He eventually left the FIA to ‘take on new challenges’. Since his departure, Masi has built an active role in motorsport outside the international spotlight. He is the director and deputy chairman of Karting Australia, a board member of the South Australian Motor Sport Board, and the independent chairman of the Supercars Commission.

Soon, the Australian will take on the role of event director at the Repco NextGen NZ Championship in New Zealand. “New Zealand has a rich and proud tradition in motorsport,” says Masi. “I look forward to working with MotorSport New Zealand, Toyota New Zealand, and the championship, and to further stimulate the development of the sport for all participants and stakeholders.” The first race of the season takes place at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park, from January 9 to 11.
