Mercedes has announced its participation in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) starting from 2025. The German automaker will compete in the LMGT3 class in collaboration with the Iron Lynx team. This marks Mercedes’ debut in the championship and its first representation in the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans since 1999.
The Italian Iron Lynx team recently ended its partnership with Lamborghini. The team has now confirmed that it will be using Mercedes vehicles from the upcoming season. Mercedes has long been flirting with a debut in the endurance championship, with its interest primarily focused on the so-called hypercar class. Iron Lynx will be using AMG GT3 vehicles in the upcoming season.
‘A New Milestone’
Before this can happen, the cars must meet special homologation criteria. A series of official wind tunnel tests will determine whether the Mercedes vehicles are indeed suitable for participation. Reportedly, the Germans have already begun the necessary processes, which are expected to be completed before the start of the new season.
“It’s no secret that we’ve been keen to bring the three-pointed star back to Le Mans for some time,” said Christoph Sagemüller, chairman of Mercedes’ motorsport division. “The upcoming WEC season is the right time to make our debut in the championship. Our successful Mercedes-AMG GT3 and the experience of the Iron Lynx team make the perfect duo. This is a new milestone in the history of our customer teams.
