After a disappointing triple header, the Mercedes team is eager to get back on track in Canada. The improved performance in Spain, compared to Imola and Monaco in the two weeks prior, already reassured team boss Toto Wolff, but the Austrian sees that his team needs to become more ‘consistent’ if they want to challenge Ferrari for second place in the championship.

Mercedes has lost its second place in the constructors’ championship. The Silver Arrows only managed to secure eighteen World Championship points during the past triple header, allowing Ferrari to overtake the German team. However, Mercedes is only six points behind the Scuderia, and is therefore eager to ‘get back on track’ in Canada.

Team boss Toto Wolff already saw improvement within the team during the Spanish GP, and wants to continue this progress in Montreal. “We showed improved performance in Barcelona and that’s something for us to build on,” the team boss explains in the preview. However, there is still work to be done for Mercedes if they want to challenge Ferrari for second place.

Consistency

Although George Russell, after the much-discussed battle with Max Verstappen, finished fourth in Barcelona, Andrea Kimi Antonelli did not reach the finish line due to a mechanical problem with his W16. The young Italian thus became the first Mercedes driver since Nico Rosberg in 2013 to fail to score points in three consecutive races.

“However, we know that we need to be more consistent and continue to make progress with the W16 if we want to regain some of our form from earlier this season,” Wolff admits. “In 2024 we had a strong race here and I hope we can repeat that level this time.” Both George Russell and then Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton made it into the top five at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve last year.
