In the aftermath of the Japanese Grand Prix, questions are once again being raised about the rear wings of the McLaren team. Fans are pointing en masse to the alleged ‘mini-DRS’ of the Woking-based team. Images of the rear wing of the MCL39, which bends under aerodynamic pressure, are also circulating on social media. Max Verstappen says he is not concerned with McLaren, although he believes it’s quite clear what’s going on.

In the run-up to the Bahrain Grand Prix, images of the McLaren MCL39 were scrutinized once again; the rear wing of Lando Norris is frequently compared to that of Max Verstappen. Those who compare the videos side by side can clearly see that the carbon on the papayas bends significantly at high speeds. Such a video has been reposted by Jos Verstappen.

‘I don’t make the rules’

The media in Sakhir also asked Max Verstappen to comment on the images. “I’ve seen the videos, but I don’t make the rules,” he replied dryly. “At the same time, I’m not the one who checks whether the rules are being followed. I probably see the same thing as what everyone else has been able to see. I know what’s going on, but I’m just focused on our car. That’s all I can do.”

Verstappen was then asked whether what McLaren did with the rear wing was legal. “It must be allowed, right?” he stated. “Everyone tries to push the boundaries of these regulations. It’s up to the FIA to monitor whether everyone is following the rules. I’m not disappointed that we don’t have such a wing,” he responded when asked. “It’s quite possible that some teams interpret the rules differently, but I can’t comment on that.”

Max Verstappen finds it difficult to elaborate on the controversial rear wing of the McLaren team.
