The starting grid for the Singapore GP is set to look different than usual. After Mercedes and Visa RB unveiled special color schemes, McLaren has also opted for a unique livery. This weekend, the MCL38 of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will sport a fresh coat of paint, harking back to the legendary Marlboro liveries of the 1980s.
McLaren refers to the special livery for the Singapore GP as ‘a legend reborn’. Indeed, the MCL38 has been given a new design; the sleek, diagonal lines are reminiscent of the iconic cars that dominated the championship under the likes of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. Thanks to the contrast between the large white areas and the papaya orange, the McLaren has become a striking sight.
McLaren Unveils Special Livery for the Third Time This Year
This marks the third time this year that McLaren has opted for a special livery. In Japan, the team chose subtle design elements from artist MILTZ, and in Monaco, the MCL38 was colored yellow, green, and blue in honor of Brazilian Ayrton Senna. During the race weekend in Singapore, more teams have a new design; Mercedes opts for a green car, and Visa RB’s vehicle is dressed in a denim look.
No Special Design for Red Bull
Title rival Red Bull had secretly also wanted to bring a unique livery to Singapore. However, weight saving prevented a new coat of paint on the RB20. Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez will have to make do with their usual color scheme for the rest of the season. Yet, there is good news for the fan who would have wanted to see his design on a real race car: the livery has not been discarded. The design that Red Bull had wanted to use in Singapore now adorns the F1 Academy car of Hamda Al Qubaisi.
