Last year, McLaren’s team clinched their first constructor’s title in over two decades. In the final Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi, the ‘papayas’ outperformed rival Ferrari. In the current season, the reigning world champions are working towards another highly dominant title run. While the battle between drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris is far from over, a new constructor’s title for McLaren is already on the horizon at the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Out of the sixteen Grand Prix races in the current Formula 1 season, McLaren has won an impressive twelve. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have together made twenty-seven podium finishes. This has earned the ‘papayas’ 617 World Championship points. As it stands, Ferrari is the biggest challenger for a new title, although it’s unlikely that the Scuderia will pose a significant threat. Ferrari follows with 280 points in second place in the World Championship. The difference is 337 points, which means that McLaren could secure the constructor’s title at the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Records
After the race weekend in Baku, a maximum of 346 points are still up for grabs. If the British racing team wants to claim the championship in Azerbaijan, they need to score nine points more than Ferrari. If they succeed, McLaren will break the record for the earliest championship win, currently held by Red Bull in 2023. Then, the ‘papayas’ will aim to beat Red Bull’s points record – also set in 2023. Max Verstappen’s team scored 860 points that year.
If McLaren retains the constructor’s title in 2025, it would be the British team’s tenth World Championship. This would also break Williams’ record. Both teams are currently tied, each with nine titles. Ferrari still leads with sixteen championships.
