McLaren has terminated the contract of Driver Development Programme racer Alex Dunne, the team announced on Thursday. The contract is terminated with immediate effect, although McLaren did not specify the reason for Dunne’s sudden departure in the official press release.
Alex Dunne joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme in 2024 when he was still racing in Formula 3. The young driver was allowed to take a seat in a Formula 1 car twice this year during the first free practice sessions of the Austrian and Italian Grands Prix. Dunne is currently fifth in the Formula 2 championship, just behind Dutch driver Richard Verschoor.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Alex and to contribute to his growth as a driver over the past year,” McLaren writes in the official announcement. “We wish Alex all the best in his further career.” The next step for Dunne is not yet known.
