President Donald Trump in a McLaren? The rumor that the U.S. President would be test-driving a car from the British team at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) next week was circulating in the paddock on Saturday in Canada. McLaren has now denied this bizarre report.
The rumor was spread by French Canal+ during the third free practice in Montreal. The American president was said to either be stepping into a McLaren team race car next week or during the United States Grand Prix in October for a few test laps. Nonsense, a spokesperson for the British racing stable now says. “Trump will not be driving our car,” was the brief but clear statement from a McLaren spokesperson to ESPN.
Visit to McLaren Garage
The gossip doesn’t come completely out of the blue. Last year, Trump visited the McLaren garage during the Miami Grand Prix 2024. The president met, among others, CEO Zak Brown and driver Lando Norris. The Brit achieved his first Formula 1 victory that same weekend, and Trump then suggested that his visit had brought Norris luck. “It was a great honor to see my friends from McLaren win the big Miami Formula 1 race,” Trump said afterwards. “That was the car I sought and approved before the race. That’s what we need in our country: winning!”
