While Max Verstappen had to yield to rival George Russell, Dutch racer Maya Weug claimed victory in Singapore. After finishing second in the first race, the F1 Academy driver crossed the finish line first in the second race. As a result, Weug – who races for Ferrari – has reduced the gap to leader Doriane Pin to just nine points, intensifying the title race as it heads towards the season finale in Las Vegas.

In the second race, Maya Weug started from pole position, but lost the lead to Pin in the opening meters. Throughout the race, the Dutch driver kept her rivals at bay. When the rain fell in Singapore, Weug capitalized and drove an impressive final lap, overtaking Pin and securing the victory. An interesting detail: Ferrari colleague Lewis Hamilton was also present at the podium ceremony.

Gamble on slicks

“You know, I’m not really sure what happened,” Weug responded afterwards. “It seemed like a good start, but suddenly I saw Doriane pass me just before the first corner. When the rain came, I was a bit tense with those dark clouds, but we never considered switching to rain tires – there were only a few laps left. The restart after the last safety car would be crucial, so I focused mainly on the tire temperature – and it worked.”

With her strong performance at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Maya Weug now stands at 142 points. “We’ve put ourselves in a position where anything can happen in Las Vegas,” she concluded optimistically. “The goal is clear: continue the performances from Zandvoort and Singapore and make up those last nine points that separate us from the title.” In Las Vegas, there are still 39 points up for grabs, enough for an exciting conclusion to the season.
