Max Verstappen has won the São Paulo Grand Prix in a dominant and impressive manner. Red Bull ambassador David Coulthard enjoyed the way Verstappen achieved this. The Dutchman’s comeback race even reminded the Scot of why he fell in love with Formula 1.
While several drivers struggled with the rain in São Paulo, Max Verstappen drove a historic comeback race. The driver started in seventeenth place and still crossed the finish line first, nearly twenty seconds ahead of P2 Esteban Ocon. Former Red Bull driver David Coulthard greatly enjoyed Verstappen’s performance.
“Max himself also said: ‘What a roller coaster of emotions’. Frustrated and angry in the morning, and then just powerful in the afternoon. I think he drove seventeen or eighteen consecutive fastest laps,” begins Coulthard his praise for Verstappen, in the Formula For Success podcast.
The Dutchman’s display of power even reminded the thirteen-time Grand Prix winner of why he fell for the Formula 1 sport. “It’s this kind of thing that, when I thought about it, is the reason why I think I fell in love with this sport. It was about wanting to see excellence, people doing things that you think: ‘That’s incredible’, but it happened,” says Coulthard.
Gaining Composure
The Scot believes that Verstappen’s comeback race also silenced his critics, especially the British press after the controversial weekend in Mexico. “It probably calmed a lot of the blame and the frustration or anger, whatever terminology you want to use, that was building up towards Max. He is his own man, he says what he wants, he doesn’t dance to anyone’s tune and that causes division.
