It was evident that Max Verstappen, disgruntled with his ‘community service’ penalty from the FIA, chose to remain mostly silent during the post-qualification press conference in Singapore. However, this was not a snub to the press. In fact, the Dutch driver was more than willing to answer all questions outside the press room. This led to Verstappen holding his own ‘press conference’, a protest against the FIA, causing quite a stir in the paddock.
The Dutchman made it clear that he disagreed with the FIA’s decision to penalize him for his comments during last Thursday’s press conference, where he used the word ‘fucked’. This resulted in Verstappen saying little to nothing when asked a question on Saturday evening. “However,” he quickly added, “I am willing to answer questions outside this room.”
Verstappen’s Impromptu Press Conference
True to his word, Verstappen positioned himself in the hallway immediately after leaving the press conference room. “It can be done here,” he said. However, just as his impromptu press conference was about to begin, a spokesperson from the FIA attempted to intervene. “No need, I’m fine with it,” Verstappen responded. He was then directed to the TV reporters in the so-called ‘square’. He complied – to avoid further punishment – and thus it became a ‘walking press conference’. Verstappen was willing to take all the time necessary, but this was not permitted.
Verstappen’s Statement
His statement, expressing his dissatisfaction with the FIA’s penalty, was clear. Point made. “What I said was really not that bad. I find the penalty that has been imposed on me ridiculous,” he reflected on the comments he made on Thursday.
Verstappen on His Car
Verstappen also had something to say about his car. “It’s been tough days, but the team has remained calm and we’ve made good progress. It wasn’t perfect, but it’s been a long time since I felt this good in the car. That gives hope for the future.” Learn more about Max Verstappen.
