Max Verstappen firmly believes that with a bit more luck, Fernando Alonso could have claimed eight world titles instead of the two he currently holds. “It’s all about making the right decisions at the right time,” he asserts.
Previously, Verstappen has mentioned the 42-year-old Spaniard from Aston Martin in his personal top five of the best F1 drivers in history. He even believes that Alonso could have been a record holder. Currently, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher hold the record with seven world titles each.
“Fernando Alonso could have had eight world titles if he had been luckier in his career by making the right decisions at the right time,” Verstappen stated in an interview with Spanish El Mundo Deportivo. He wants to emphasize that the best driver doesn’t necessarily have to be the most successful.
‘Fernando is a Fighter’
Max Verstappen: “No, titles don’t matter. People always look at who has won the most titles or whatever and automatically put them at the top of the list. But it’s not just about the titles and that applies to all sports. Is the person who has won six Champions Leagues or one or two World Cups the best player? Not necessarily. It’s a team performance that needs to come together, and that’s why I think Fernando is definitely one of the best drivers in history. Because wherever he went, he was always very fast.”
Verstappen continues: “But you need the material to be able to win races and unfortunately, he didn’t always have that. Fernando is a fighter. He is also very versatile, as he can drive many different cars: Formula 1, Indy, Dakar, endurance. And he has always been fast in all disciplines. That’s something that few drivers can do.”
